Come on, give me the chills

Thoughts about changing, life, and whatever comes to mind.

  • fast and cheap

One thing I learned about businesses is that one of the worst situation is to have a customer that wants it fast and cheap.

With this minds it’s hard for you to create true value for the user or even for yourself.
Fast means to ignore errors, cheap means to choose cheap resolution.

Anything cheap comes at the price of maintainability and durability.

In italy we say: when you buy something cheap you pay 2 times.

  • what would happen if marketing disappeared?

When I was in Kyoto there was a law in the city: you couldn’t try to “invite” the customer to try your restaurant or see something.

    It was unusual.
When I first heard of it I remembered the times in Istanbul or in Marrakech where we, as tourist, were flooded by requests from the waitresses or waiters to choose their restaurant or so on.

Strangely that didn’t happen in japan so much, so when I heard of the law it was unusual to me.
Today that got me thinking: What would happen if marketing disappeared tomorrow?

    What products would people choose?
I remember talking about “tricking people with your marketing“, sadly that advertising has started again in the radio. So it was natural to me to think of “would that company disappear if we were to ban marketing?”

A world without any kind of marketing would use the word of mouth to spread, so only the valuable products would survive.
No websites, no advertising, no marketing.

If your product can survive, you’re good to go.

  • apologize first

Few days ago I messed up because I wasn’t very concentrated.
I did an error packaging some products and it was obvious when they arrived at the destination.

There are many days when we do something wrong, that’s part of life.
    What can we do different?
We can learn for sure, I know, but we can also apologize first.

We usually tend to justify ourselves, but what truly matters is apologizing.
Recognizing the error instead of acknowledging the reasons that let us do it.

Let’s face it, we tend to hide our mistakes, but they are part of us.
The mistakes we do are part of the people we are, they are part of the package.
You can hide it for one day, but sooner or later someone will find out.

  • missing in action

after almost a consistent month of writing I skipped a day.

This makes me wonder why I don’t write every single morning, although I also happen to like writing in the evening when I’ve got some ideas about the whole day.

That said, the goal is to always improve and keep going while remembering how we didn’t accomplish our goals (in this case the goal was writing every day).

This thing of “thinking about why things don’t work out” is great.

  • on caring

I got stuck in an elevator today, no big deal, but there was a phrase that amazed me.
When I called the support from within the elevator phone the first thing the woman on the other side of the line said was

“Aside from the fact that you’re blocked, are you all ok and feel fine?”

Seems quite obvious to ask right now, but if you look at it this is probably the result of many improvements over how the people communicate in these emergency cases.

In the beginning maybe there were people who wouldn’t care, but I guess after many protests or blames we got to this, to this empathy of communication.

What would happen if we all communicated with such empathy?
How would the world change if the first words we say to each other in an emergency situation were
“Aside from this emergency, are you all right and feel fine?”
