Come on, give me the chills

Thoughts about changing, life, and whatever comes to mind.

  • it’s not the job, it’s the surroundings

There are times where a job seems impossible.
It’s not. It’s the same job that took you there.
What makes it impossible are the conditions, the constraints, the absence of human behaviour.

  • undoing racism

We’re seeing something very unusual here in italy right now. We have people focused on immigrants, hating them, just like 60 years ago.

How did we come to this? It’s hard to explain but to me there’s only one thing that led to this situation: We allowed it.
Word by word, small concessions to people that were “a little bit racist”, not _really_ racist, but had that spark of intolerance.

We thought “he does no harm”, because a single word doesn’t change the world, _if alone_.
But after some time the words were voices the voices were crowd, the crowd became the major party in italy.

How to undo something that it’s rooted deep into our fears, deep behind our brains, the fear of the unknown, how to undo how we think today since we stopped fact-checking the links we see?

Bit by bit, bird by bird. I think that’s the only way. We’ll start using a word, trying to explain a different point of view. Not to change anyone’s mind, but to give them an expanded view.

Bit by bit, maybe in ten, twenty, thirty years, we’ll see a difference.

  • the magic of thinking big

How many great ideas did you have last year? How many this month?

If you look at ideas alone you might be fooled into thinking that yes, you can make a big difference with a big idea.

Keeping aside the fact that idea without execution equals nothing, there’s more to it.
An idea and a great execution is not enough.

Let’s say you’re asked to think big, to imagine a new product for the next ten years.
Can you make it? Will you match how the world will be shaped in the future?

No, we don’t. And the fact is: Preparing a 7-years or 10 years plan, doesn’t guarantee you’ll get there. But why some companies are so ahead of time that they can match the shape of the future?

They didn’t have a magical thing. They did have money and decided to spend a significal amount of that money towards some research and development in areas that _now_ are worthless, and in 10 years might be worth it.

They might risk it on many areas, knowing only 1 out of 3 will be successful, but for their business that will be enough.

That’s the difference. If your dream is your best bet then it’s a bet with a high risk. But if you decide to put your money into many baskets you have higher chances that the new technologies will be the one you tested and you might have a chance.

That’s why we shouldn’t always think big. The breakthroughs are risky. Sometimes they are needed, but if that is your only plan you’re either winning or losing it all.

  • things you don’t know

in life there are no blueprints. There is no clear path.

That’s why it’s not really important what you choose. You can change it. Some time it’ll be harder than others, but nothing is set in stone.

You can unravel any choice, make it better, make it count, as long as you keep your heart next to your mind.

  • raise the flag

You can’t save them all. You can’t fix it all.

There are things that are part of your possibilities and you should pursue them. But some of them might require too much effort, for what?

Given the fact that we all have a finite amount of time, energy and will, how will you spend it?

Life is similar to buying something. You can buy what you can afford, but the difference is that the energy can be different in time and for different people.

It means we need to choose which battle are worth it, which are meaningful, which of them make an impact in the world.
